Computerless Again

Grayley: What again? How can my Mama be so stupid? She should have gotten that new computer months ago.

Grayley: What again. How can my Mama be so stupid? She should have gotten that new computer months ago.

Short note here to let all the bloggers who I follow know that I will not be able to comment on any blogs till I get my computer fixed or a new one which ever- comes first. 🙂

It is simply too much trouble to use the library since the computer usage is timed for an hour. Egads my time is almost up.

Hope you are still doing well, Yvonne. Don’t feel you have to respond to this comment, please. Just wanting you to know you’re being thought about. Many blessings to you…

    • Kathy, thank you for thinking of me, the kind words and, that you care enough to say hello. Yes, of course, I’ll respond, no matter if you had only written, “hi.”

I have missed two of your posts and not intended that,to not to pass me by. I kept telling myself that I would go back. Once I commit to someones blog I don’t like to miss commenting. But it happens sometimes.

I’ve had a bout of afib again after what I believe was triggered by double dosing on my throid med unintentionally. Just to busy to slow down and not keeping track. Also had swallowed about one-two tablespoons of Jack D for a toothache. Normally I hold the whiskey in my mouth over the tooth and then spit it out. It was chilly and windy that one day so I thought, “gee old JD tastes so good 🙂 and I got chilled so I’ll just swallow this time. ETOH does not help if one is prone to afib but I never dreamed one little jigger or less would make any difference. Apparently IT DOES!

The afib is resolved but then my feet decided to swell and now I’m taking Lasix. Gee, Kathy, it is hell to get old. I cook everything from scratch, no salt, broiled fresh salmon every day, fresh greens, and brown rice, butternut, yellow, or acorn squash, two apples, 3-4 bananas as my snacks. decaf coffee. It all sounds boring but I’m hungry at my supper meal and eat with gusto. 🙂

      • Kathy says:

Gosh–think of the possible consequences of one jigger! My husband has afib, kept under control by medication, so I sort of understand. I think your diet sounds quite lovely, actually. Glad to hear you eat with gusto. Hope you feel better soon, Yvonne.

        • Thanks Kathy. My afib med is Metoprolol and had been doing a good job of control until those 2 swallows of JD and I had also beeen using a tad of salt again but now it is totally no salt again. I don’t like the feel of my heart going whack-ee-dee-whack. It is a bit frightening since afib can cause a stroke so I had to go back to taking Coumadin again. Hate the stuff. Oh well. It could be so much worse.

        • Kathy says:

Hey I know about Metoprolol–Barry was on that first, but he was allergic to it. You take care, my friend!

        • Thanks and will do Kathy.

  2. A belated happy new year to you, hope 2014 is a good one for you. Computers are annoying when they are playing up, but I agree desktops are a lot more reliable. I went down the mac route as I was sick of windows crashing, an expensive option but a worthwhile investment, touch wood only the internet has let me down since then 😦

    Grayley is absolutely stunning xx

    • Hi, Claire. It is so nice to get your greeting and comment. Are you posting yet? You have not posted since March, 2013 or so. I do keep up with you on Flickr and I like your photography very much.

I have thought of getting a mac but have no idea of the tech support one gets with a Mac. I would be willing to fork out the money if it would last till I croak or nearly that long. I still am not sure of what kind of computer I’ll get and I pray every day that this one continues to last. It’s HP Windows Vista and about 5 years old now.

I’ll tell Grayley you think she is a stunner. She is a sweet cat and one of 4 litter mates that I hand raised so Grayley and her mates are quite special to me.

Happy New Year to you, Claire. Best regards, yvonne

      • Hi Yvonne, I’m getting back into my blog again starting today. I’ve had a few issues with commuting to work etc, and life in general, all back on track now, fingers crossed.

To be honest (touch wood), I’ve had no issues with my iMac since I purchased it. I literally took it out of the box, plugged it in and away I went. I did have some issues with syncing my iPad to iMac and Apple support online were brilliant got it sorted within a couple of hours. I’ve spoken with Apple when I was setting up my iPhone and I have to say they were brilliant. But like anything technical I’m sure there is someone out there that has had no end of problems. Everyone I know say you can’t beat Apple computers. I would say the hardest thing to get used to is the different setup from Windows, but it’s simple enough once you get into it. My advice is go into a dedicated Apple retailer near where you live and get them to show you what it can do for you.

Hope this helps and good luck in finding a solution that is right for you. Happy New Year 🙂

        • Thanks for the advice about Apple. I didn’t know what sort of tech support one can get with a Mac. I will investigate and see if I can handle a Mac. I know they are expensive but are supposed to hold up very well.

I’m glad that you will be getting back to your blog. Sounds good and I’m looking forward to a new post from you- soon, I hope.

  3. Just a short visit to see how you are and wish you a Happy NewYear with a repaired computer 😉 I saw that you had some low temperatures in Houston. Weather is capricious all over the world, this past week was almost like early Spring in the Alps. So unusual !

    • Hi Isabelle. It is so nice to get your lovely Happy New Year wish for me. There was nothing major wrong with my computer. I had gotten a notice from Norton to uninstall the security thingy and to then reinstall. I had no idea how to accomplish such a feat as I’m a computer, died in the wool, dummy. So the repair guy took care of that problem and then downloaded all my photos to external hard drive but then he messed with the windows photo storage. He rearranged how the photos are listed, edited, and extracted. In short he messed up what I had considered a perfect system. I’ve been trying to deal with it but I have to go to great lengths to edit and to find what I am lookking for. So I’ve dealt with this for four weeks and it has taken me ages to add more photos to the WP media gallery. I have been very angry about it all and so I reckon on Monday or so I’ll trudge back to the repair man and see if he can undo what he thought he was making better.

All in all that is the story of my life. I can’t seem to win for losing. I take 2 steps forward and then go three steps backwards. I think maybe the universe is sending me a message to quit while I’m ahead. 🙂 I’ve achieved, on this blog, more than I ever thought and I’m serioulsy considering quitting. It has become a pain in my backside after something so simple turns into a virtual nightmare.

      Best regards,
      yvonne

  4. Oh no, Yvonne! I hope you get your computer situation resolved soon. They are a blessing and a curse, although more a blessing I have to admit.

    • Tim. I’ve had my old computer back now since Dec. 5th. It was nothing major. Making a decision of which new one to get has driven me batty. I don’t want Windows 8 but all the lap tops have 8. I can get a Dell desk top with W7. But if I need to ship it back while under warranty then that is a whole lot of packing and lugging.

So I’m going to get another HP where I can store my photos and play DVDs and CDs> I can purchase a W7 from Walmart or Amazon and have that installed. I’ve put off getting the new computer since I’ve had vet bills on a couple of animals and my animals come before my needs.

I have to agree with you- it is wonderful when the computer is working up to snuff and when not then I am lost without it for many different reasons. 🙂

      • Vet bill, boy I can sure relate to that dilemma. Best of luck with everything. 🙂

        • Tim, I know that you are fully aware of how much money is spent toward keeping our animals healthy and treated when something goes amiss. I remember the post when you wrote of Nellie’s snakebite and how all those bites almost killed her. Thank God for a wonderful vet and for you and Mary who willingly spent a small fortune to have her treated.

Muddy my rescued lab had what the vet at first thought was a histocytoma but it contined to get larger. I didn’t want to take the chance of just doing a biopsy first so I had my vet do “an extensive” removal. The cost was $738. That was back in November. The tumor on Muddy was a fibrolipoma but these can increase in size and I figured there was no point in “watching it grow” and then needing eventual removal.

Since then I’ve were lab tests on 3 cats (one test came back as postive for hyperthroidism and now that cat is on Tapsole generic) and one very old cat euthanized and cremated. So yes, my vet bills for one year are trememdous. Some years the bills are not so bad.

Dear Yvonne, I want to wish you a very Happy New Year for you and your family, good health for everyone and your pets.
Hope you get a new computer..
    All the best

    • Chantal, thank you for the good wishes. I am sending warm wishes from Texas to France for you and your pets. I look forward to more wonderful pics of your village.

I too, hope to have that new computer soon.It is quite a problem for me to choose the right one. It seems that all of the computers are shoddy with one thing of the other that is made up to standard. I will just put extra warranty on which ever one I buy from Costco and probably have computer guy install a Windows 7 system which is still available at Amazon and Walmart and probably other places as well.

      Fond regards, yvonne

    • Thank you for visiting and I’m not sure I know what your comment means. I can only connect it to “An Amateur Photographer.” And that is really what I am.

I have visited your blog and you are a fantastic writer. I hope that I can find the time to read some of your posts. I’m quite busy with the animals in my care so my time is limited. I no longer post very often and only do so when I feel I have quality info or something of value about animals.

      Regards, yvonne

      • It was a compliment. =) I didn’t see where the self-professing amateur was. Your photography is vibrant. Thank you for the feedback on my own work, Yvonne. I hope you enjoy the thoughts and discussions whenever you revisit.

        Best,

        Diana

        • Diana, you are a dear lady. Thank you for the compliment. Yes, I intend to “get back” to your blog. It might be a few days or a few weeks but I surely want to read some of the past or future posts. Your love for writing is apparent. Take care.

          Regards,
          yvonne

  6. Beautiful color!!! Looking so cute!!!

  7. Such a beautiful portrait of your cat ! His eyes say “Never mind the computer… I am here to keep you company 🙂 ”
Nevertheless I understand your frustration and hope that things will be fixed as soon as possible for you, dear Yvonne.

If we don’t talk before the New Year I wish you a very Happy, Healthy and Enjoyable New Year. Take good care of you and thank you for your much appreciated visits and comments. Thoughtful words always.

  8. Hi Yvonne. You just popped into my mind so thought I would drop by to wish you all the blessings of the Christmas season. Grayley is beautiful!! Hope your computer is sorted soon. Love and Peace from Izzy ♥

    • Isabella, this it so kind of you to drop in an say hello. Thank you for the kind wishes. And I wish the same for you. I have my computer back and the computer man downloaded my photos to external hard drive as I paid him to do. Last night I was going to do a new post and needed to access my photos. Well it was not possible to find whatever photo I wanted. Somehow he had messed with my settings and all the photos came up with just a jep name. The photos were no longer in folders. I wanted to cry. I am seriously thinking that I am getting a “universal message” that it is time to hang it up. The computer guy is not even in his shop today. I will give it one more try by calling a young kid that is a computer geek but I’ll have to pay him but that is okay. I can not even put photos that I edit into a folder. It is total mess.

I am seriously thinking of not blogging anymore but will keep my blog site. I can not decide on a new computer and if I want Widows 7 I will need to get a desk top. Dell in the only company with Windows 7 that is at costco’s. All the reviews are 50/50 or worse and that is not good enough for me. It sounds like a roll of the dice. 🙂

      • Poor Yvonne. You are having trouble. But we all have it, you know. Computers are great when they’re working and a pain when they’re not. If I was you, I would get back to the chap that messed it up and ask him to put it right. You paid him to do a good job.
Please dont give up, at least not yet. Give it a short break and then start again. It works for me. Just take your mind away from it and do something completely different. It will break you out of the stalemate.
I’ve got a laptop and Windows 7 works perfectly on it, and you can get one pretty cheaply. I think this one was £399 but I’ve seen them even cheaper, especially now with the sales on.
In the meantime, I will say a prayer for you that the problem is resolved.
Let me know how you get on. Love from Izzy ♥

        • Thanks Isabella for the pep talk. It is the W 7 that I am trying to find and they are few and far between. I want to buy form Costco for there tech support and that are all based here in the states. These people I can understand and know how to fiix a problem. It is unlimited support for the life of the computer. I don’t know what direction to take in the way of the one brand (Dell) that is available from Costco. If I get a W8 I am sure that I will need to buy a W7 operating system from Amazon that has it for $200. I will attempt to be rational. I know my complaints are petty in the scheme of things and I need to be grateful that I still have all my body parts working in my elderly years. 🙂

Impossible to live without our computers !! I hope you will get it fixed sood.
    I love your cat.
I came to wish you a Merry Christmas for you and your family and of course your pets..
    See you next year Yvonne!

  10. Kathy says:

Oh you poor thing! You will be in our thoughts, for sure, hoping that you’ll be back with a working computer soon. Egads, wishing you a VERY Merry Christmas, Yvonne! I am sure Santa will be good to you.

    • Thanks Kathy for the Christmas wishes. The same to you.

I have my computer back as of this past Friday. Nothing major was wrong but my computer will be 5 years old in June, 2014. It has been a good HP laptop. But I need to get one soon since I fear this one might play out at any time. I am REAL DEPRESSED about the new computer situation. Dell makes desk top towers with Windows 7 and a few desktops that have the complete package with Windows 7. The reviews are 50/50 and some models have terrible reviews. This is buying from Costco to get their English speaking tech support. 🙂

Anyhow, most people have told me not to get a Windows 8 since it is so difficult to use for a computer dummy such as I. My eyes and my patience are just about worn out due to all the frustation of looking at Costco’s web site and attempting to get a computer that is decent. Amazon sells Windows 7 and I am thinking of getting the computer guy to build me a desk top. Otherwise I am seriously thinking of giving up blogging- really!

      • Kathy says:

No, you musn’t give up! I heard the same about Windows 8. So my Christmas wish for you is that something–anything–will come together so that you will find a good platform to continue sharing. Fingers crossed for you.

        • That is very kind of you and I pray and wish for a rational solution that I can handle as well. But the world would not end if I stopped and in fact I have come close to quitting many times. We shall see, what we shall see. Or something like that. 🙂 So send some of your magical karma down to Central Texas and maybe that will help too.

        • Kathy says:

Do you live in Waco? How coincidental! Our music teacher from our tiny little school is spending Christmas with her sister in Waco.

        • Yes, I’m glad to say that I live in a very convemnient area of Texas. Not too big and not to small. I’m about 5-10 minutes from just about all the places that I need and yet my property is almost like being in the country. I will probably erase most of this after I know that you have read.

Has the lady been here before and if so I’d be curious to know what she thinks of this town when you see her again.

        • Kathy says:

I have no idea if Becky has ever been there, but I shall TRY to remember and ask her. Merry Christmas, Yvonne!

        • Thanks Kathy. Happy Christmas to you as well.

  11. Lottie Nevin says:

Grrrrr!! Thinking of you, Yvonne. Big Hugs, Lottie XXX

    • Hi Lottie and thanks. Not anything real serious but must get a new computer and have not fully decided which route to take. Very worrisome. Hugs to you and take good care. Have been thinking of you helping neighbor make sausages. Saw that over on Gerard’s blog. I think you are working way too hard. Be careful please and give Colin S. some extra pats via air waves from Texas. 🙂 Hugs, yvonne xxx

  12. Of Grayley, you are gorgeous but I doubt Mamma thanks you for your wisdom after the case 😉 Hope you’re back up and running soon.

    • Hi there and thanks. Grayley is one wise cat. I should have known that something was going to go amiss when she kept peering at me eye to eye in the most intent manner. Did she know something was up with computer? 🙂

      • Unless Grayley put the evils on your computer cos you were paying it too much attention 😀

        • Ha,ha. Now that is funny. Love your humor. My cats do like to get in my lap if I’m at the kitchen table and “in the computer.” However, they have to be content with sitting beside the computer and watching me move my hands and fingers. At the moment I don’t see Grayley near but her brother, Beasley, is “right here” and keeps inching and itching to get closer to me. He is one that can really “look me in the eye.” It is thought provoking at how some cats have so much expression in their eyes.

Grayley, Beasley, Carley, and Frankie were hand raised by me after their feral mother was Killed on the highway. They came to me after this one man had heard of me and my love for cats. I especially love these four and two more hand rasied cats. We have a mutual adoration.

        • Ah, you truly are cat mother to the lucky little things!

        • Thanks. Yep, just call me the “Cat’s Mama” or the “Cat’s Meow.” 🙂 🙂 🙂

  13. Sorry you’re having problems with the computer again Yvonne. What a pain. Last time I went to the library in Spain they were all broken! In Spain when I was in exile with Snowy I used a cafe at a euro an hour which was pretty reasonable I thought.

Here in Gib at our library it used to be a quid an hour I think, but they have lifted that and it is free now. I think the time limit is until someone else wants it.

Fingers and paws crossed for you and your furry family and if we don’t hear from you before Christmas/New Year, best wishes and hope they both bring whatever you want – good health and a decent computer might be a good start 😀

    Ms Gib

    • Hello Ms Gib and yes I will be ordering a new one- have to look long and hard at Costco site. Have mine back but it is old and I just can use it as a standy should if the new one takes a nose dive. But what to get-I’m not sure yet. It is driving me battier. 🙂

Yes, not having a computer is bad especaially if one does not watch TV. I worked crossword puzzles from old newspapers. I had some extra time.

Happy holiday to you and partner, Pippa Dog, and Snowy. Take good care. ~yvonne

  14. shoreacres says:

Oh, fiddle. You know, you’re the third person I know in the past week who’s either had a hard drive crash or something just flat go wrong with no apparent solution.

I’ve been hearing my hard drive making a few strange noises. It’s flat time for me to get a bunch of stuff backed up, pronto, before mine decides to ….uh…. take a little rest. 😉

Best wishes on getting things put back together. We’ll be here.

    • Linda, I have my old computer back with not a whole lot wrong. I had the man put all my photos to external hard drive and re-install Norton which kept saying to de-install and re-install. Have no idea why. I did not know how since I had misplaced the box that the CD came in and so I had to pay for a new one. Oh well. I must get more organized. 🙂

  15. sybil says:

“Egads”and Gadzooks” … hope you not computer less for long. That cat photo is wonderful. Happy New Year !

    • Thanks Sybil and happy New Year to you as well. computer is back but now must make decision of what to get since I think this one could go out at anytime. Got all my photos put to external hard drive. I did not know how. And two other things fixed that were not too bad.

      • sybil says:

I got a Terra bite back up unit quite cheaply and it backed up my whole computer. Y’might want to get yo self one just in case.

        • Sybil, I am a computer dummy even though I used one at work for many years. I had the computer genius repairman back all my photos to external hard drive since I am too dumb to know how to do that. But he messed with my photo files after backing up and now all I see is everything over on the left. It all has a title but when I click to open the title file all I see are all the photos in jep mode and I have to click on evry single one. Can’t do that for WP as each and every time I click it sends the photo over to my blog photo file. To top it off he was not in the his shop today so he’ll probably not return till Mon. I might call Costco tech suppert to see if one of the supers is willing to see if they cqn fix my files back to the way they were. They can look inside my computer after I agree by checking boxes with their directions. They always ask first if there is anything on my computer that I would not want an outsider to see. Of course I have nonthing that a child could not lool at.

So what is the Terra bite thing? Is that the same as an external hard drive?

  16. Don’t know if I am still within your time limit so I’ll comment quick…sorry about your problem and I hope you remedy it one way or another, Yvonne. Good luck.

    • Steve, thanks for the comment. Old one is ok for now but will be ordering a new one from Costco pronto. Have to decide which way to go- lap or desk. HUGE DECISION. 🙂

  17. TexWisGirl says:

    good luck with that!

  18. You take care too and good luck with the computer

  19. First let me say that Grayley is absolutely gorgeous. Computer hassles are a real pain, especially with all you have to do that is otherwise keeping you busy. Hope for you it sorts out fast. And, hope you and yours have a Happy Holiday. Sending hugs. Paulette

  20. Just Rod says:

PS beautiful photo of beautiful cat.

    • Thanks Rod. I’ll tell Grayley she’s beautiful. 🙂

Ps Have computer back and now must make a decsion of what to get. DELL tower that has Windows 7 for $400 plus, get a 24 in. monitor for $200 but the computer man say that the sound system is not got good but that I can buy one at Office Depot or wherever. Or to get a lap top that has Windows 8 which will take several weeks to get accustomed to all the changes. Got my old one back late this afternoon and I’m just now getting around to comments again. Nothing real great was wrong. But I “might” do a post about all of the computer problems that one can incur when using these “MOSHEENES.”

  21. Just Rod says:

Oh no! Gadzooks that’s annoying. Worse than a giant fur-ball Hope you are up and blogging again soon.

    • Rod I was trying to find the place to turn off comments and in the meantime “they” gave me 30 minutes more. 🙂 How grand of them. Anyway will catch up with eveyone blogs when I have a computer again. Take care. Now must rush over to my email.
